The Angel of Darkness is by far the most challenging game in the series. Lara Croft needs upgades to pursue the next mission and Kurtis Trent provides his own i-cups. Whilst playing Kurtis you start to relize how much you miss Lara due to the brick like manner of kurtis when over-coming obstacles. The constant loading of the Paris missions does push your patience a bit and chating takes too long. As a fan of Tomb Raider I like an adventure with a story and for once this game lives up to this expectation. To play this game you really need to understand the Tomb Raiders.

Overall a good game for fans but disappionting for new comers.

I have to admit that, possibly like many, I went out and pretty much bought this straight away after that three year wait. Well, when I put it on, I was very disappointed with the game itself. The cutscenes are not like cutscenes anymore where you can just take a break, however small, from the action of the game. In fact, I think that choosing what Lara says to the other person who she is talking too is very poor indeed.
As for the character evolution, that is very annoying as when you push something, all you hear Lara say is “I feel stronger now” or “My legs are stronger now”. It is all very annoying. If you were to buy this, do not even buy it as you would be very disappointed with it. The story is very overrated too. And a limited time with grabbing ledges and shimmying around them? Thats really an awful change.
One part I did like however, was the part with Kurtis Trent but that was far too short for my liking. If they say there is a new character to play as, then that character should have an adventure of their own or a longer part in the game itself. Not two levels and then a ridiculously hard boss.

There, rant over. Seriously, just save your money for something good like Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Tomb Raider: Underworld or the old Tomb Raider games which were really superb and still are.

  3. Ms. R. Porter Says:

Lara’s first venture ito PS2 territory still holds a soft spot for me, I guess I was just so glad they bought her back (from the dead apparently) after she got killed off in Egypt. This game was supposed to be the first in a trilogy that Core Design were developing, with their advanced PS2 engine, but the critics hit Angel of Darkness hard, which resulted in the move of programming to Crystal Dynamics in the USA, which after years of waiting gave us Legend, and the rest is history. . . In this game, Lara is quite a shady character, on the run from the Law for being suspected of Von Croy’s murder. She has some new moves, vaulting over low walls, and the stealth moves and attack. She can attack without weapons also, which is quite amusing to watch her trying to punch or kick something to death. She rope swings hand over hand. She can only hang from ledges for a short time, which is quite annoying at times, and on the PS2 version, there seems to be a bug in the use of guns and ammo, which i could only overcome by picking up baddies dropped weapons and using them until they ran out. Otherwise, the weapons did not see to work. (In the earlier levels initially). Lara has to carry out certain manouvres to increase the strength in her arms and legs, before she is able to progress further in some situations. The game is not quite so linear, in the Parisian Ghetto for example, there are two different ways to get to Bouchards hideout. Lara restores her health with additional items such as chocolate bars etc. . . . Instead of only using the large/small medipack, as in previous games, which can be useful, if you only need a small health boost. Introducing RPG elements can be really amusing, mostly Lara has to be nice and polite to get what she wants (but it’s fun to save it and make her give all the horrid answers, just to see what happens, especially when talking to Bouchard) but do save it before hand as the result of Lara backchatting to dangerous criminals can have fatal consequences! In the PS2 version you can access the secret training Level (The one eidos originally intended for AOD) instead of the Parisian Backstreets version. Pause the game, then hold down L1,R2,down and triangle (all at the same time), release and immediately, in quick succession press circle, up, square, triangle, right, down. Skip Level and Select Level will now appear when the game is paused By selecting the parisian backstreets level in this fashion, the derelict appartment level will not load automatically, at the end of the level, and Lara can go all the way to the bottom of the ladder and climb down the stairs to the left (when facing the ladder) to access the secret training level. I include this in the review as I particularly enjoyed it, it gave me a thrill I suppose, It is not an easy cheat, it took me several attempts to press the buttons fast enough, but was well worth it in the end. Anyway, back to the game. . . It does have a lot of bugs, Lara doesn’t always grab the ledge she’s supposed to, I found the hardest bit was getting her to climb to the roof space in the hall of seasons, and grabbing the painting in the room after with the ghost prowling around, took loads of attempts which I could not have done without forum help. But once you know HOW to do it, it’s not so much of a problem. Kurtis is a great character, and is it just me, or is there some obvious attraction between him and Lara when he disarms her in the Louvre?). The story line is dark, Lara is moody and impatient and I love it! In my opinion it’s definitely worth playing, I have completed it various times and i still love it, for the fact that it’s so different from all the others. Gameplay can be frustrating at times, the endless climbing of tall ladders in the Strafhoff Fortress particularly gets my goat, but the dark storyline, makes all the hassle worth it. Play it, you wont be dissapointed. I wasn’t. With the Recent release of Tomb raider underworld, and it’s dreadful conversion to PS2, this game seems all the more a better example of gameplay for its programming at the time. . .

How can I best describe Angel of Darkness? Hmmmm. . .
Well, I’ve played all the other Tomb Raiders and loved them all
in different ways, but this. . . this is like that episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 when the crew go back in time and join the old crew on board the original Enterprise, via some clever editing. There was a scene where the more recent (updated Klingon) “Worf” shares a canteen scene with the old 60’s version of Klingons and, surprise, surprise, they look nothing alike. As a joke to laughingly brush aside the obvious developments in make-up and styling (the rippling forehead etc), the Star Trek writers make Worf’s fellow crew members ask him why his fellow species bare no resemblance to him at all. He responds by saying that it was some embarrassing event in his planet’s development that he doesn’t wish to discuss! (Ahem).

This is how I describe this edition of Tomb Raider. . . an embarrassing event in Lara’s past which I no longer wish to discuss.
