Control system takes a little bit of getting used to and the lengthy cut scenes can be annoying, however, all things aside this is a great game at the price especially when you play in full co-op.

Can’t help thinking that in certain respects the Graphics although excellent do at times look a little dated. But 10-12 months is a long time in gaming development.

Definately worth a couple of play throughs at the very least.

Not tried on of the DLC optional modes as I feel that it won’t translate too well having already been spoilt with the likes of MW2.

Summary Great Game for the price and the slight flaws can be excused.

Absolutely great game to play with a friend on the same console.

Teamwork is a must to get through the levels, many interactions between you and your partner are available (more than in “Gears of War 2″ or “Modern Warfare 2″). The melee attacks are most fun.

If you do not have the game so far, buy it now for this very cheap price.

  3. G. Hanks Says:

The Resident Evil series took a radical change of direction with the fourth numerical sequel, over-hauling the control system, viewpoint and scale of interactivity in the environments. This provided gamers with one of the best games of the last generation and understandably number five was eagerly anticipated.

There have been no major overhauls this time, for the most part the character control and interaction remains familiar to those who played through Leon’s adventures in number four. However the main addition and selling point is that zombie blasting has now become a two-player co-operative experience. Chris Redfield is joined by fellow agent Sheva of the African anti-bioterrorism group BSAA.

For a first time play through I chose to go through it in single player with the computer controlling Sheva, to give a chance to experience everything at my own pace. The emphasis in the game is heavily on the co-operation aspect so having decent AI is a must, especially in a game that is strict with the ammo and health pick ups. The AI succeeds in some ways and fails in others. The path-finding is generally decent and Sheva will usually place herself in a useful position without hindering the player. There were only a couple of times where I found she ran to areas that would put herself in danger with little I could do to stop her. Thankfully these were few and far between and didn’t end up being game breaking.

Weapon and item usage is a mixed bag, Sheva generally responded well with herb use and using a handgun, however when giving her a melee weapon she had issues choosing the right points to switch between guns and close range combat, let alone actually attacking the enemy. Giving her automatic weapons is also not such a good idea as she is far too trigger happy for the amount of ammo that is available. This does force the player down certain routes of what sort of load-out they should give Sheva, more often than not this relegates her role to handguns and healing for most.

The game really excels in two-player mode though, if you can find a companion of similar skill who is happy to go through the game at the same pace as yourself. Certainly the harder difficulties would be tough to face with the AI controlled Sheva so having a competent and frugal player assisting you is near essential. Teamwork and good communication are a must, especially at the parts where both players are separated from each other. There’s a real incentive to look out for the other player, if one player dies then both have to restart so good sharing of herbs, guns and ammo are essential.

Outside of the game-play the clear change in artistic direction for the series is stark and unfortunately the emphasis on action does lose some of what made the series so tense and immersive. The horror has all but disappeared and any tension felt is more a charged adrenaline feeling than a “ducking behind the sofa” one. There are some moments where the game slips into cover based gunplay that feels very odd for the series. Whilst the plot supports this move it just loses any of the atmosphere and fear created by the old games, simply put, zombies shouldn’t carry guns. They’ve also dropped any element of exploration that has been present since the series inception, making it a liner tour of different locations with no puzzles or route planning. This turns the game more into a rollercoaster ride (albeit a fairly adept one) than a proper adventure game.

As part of the Resident Evil canon the game disappoints on an atmospheric level but as a 2 player co-op experience it is a lot of fun to play. Refined controls would be good to see in future entries as movement still feels very stunted. Until then this still provides a great deal of tense, if not scary enjoyment.

If your a fan of resident evil 4 then you’ll love 5 as it has the same kind of gameplay, over shoulder 3rd person view. The graphics are very nice with great music and a lot of unlockables, well worth what your paying for.
A lot of people have been complaining about the control scheme but I don’t understand why as their are 4 different controller schemes you can set in the options section. It may take a bit of time to get use to the controls as they may feel a bit clucnky which I can understand however once you get the hang of it the controls become a breeze to cope with.
As well as the inclusion of mercenaries mode which has been an installment in previous games there is also a versus mode which is available for download and even more downloadable content from capcom is being released.
Overall Resident evil 5 is a great game which will have you put many hours into it.

The games 2 player co-op mode is amazingly fun and you can also (thanks to the xbox 360 headset) talk to your friends or anyone else from around the world online.
